The law established in our hearts

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 2, 2018 | MK 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Reflection: Jesus in our Gospel this Sunday invites us to see beyond our established human law and to focus on what is essential, the Divine law that God has established in our hearts. We can be so particular with the external things, of what we ‘do’ for God, while detaching it from our personal experience of His presence. Our liturgical acts should not be divorced from our personal life. Our liturgical action is an expression of our belief in God and our relationship with Him. Jesus reminds us that what defiles man is from within. What makes our experience of God dull are not just the annoying things that happen during the Mass, but much more than that are our distant actions. We cannot experience the Divine presence because we distance ourselves from Him through sin and too much familiarity with our actions in the Mass. God has always been reaching out to us, but we, more often than not, distance ourselves from Him.
