Augustinian Recollect Community in Bacolod bakes Bread for COVID thru ‘Kindness Bakery’

Bacolod City, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL–The “Kindness Bakery” is a localized approach to augment the need of the people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aware of the impact of the lockdown, people need food during this crisis.

The Augustinian Recollect Nuns of the St. Ezekiel Moreno Monastery in Bacolod, known for their cloistered life, actively participated in COVID response initiatives; at the start of the lockdown they made PPEs (face masks, and medical gowns) for the frontliners and the people in their dress-making workshop. And recently, they are transforming their Recoletos Farm Store into a “Kindness Bakery” to participate in solidarity work, by baking and distributing bread to poor communities.

“Our monastic calling is also to impart Christ’s saving mission to humanity, we are praying unceasingly with the world and for our people; and at the same time be in real solidarity…” said Sr. Carmen Orduña, OAR, former Prioress of the community.

ARCORES International started this campaign in the areas of Naga and Minglanilla in Cebu in partnership with Pusyon Kinaiyahan, Franciscan Friars of Charity and Discalced Augustinians.

The Kindness Bakery forms part of the “Kindness Station” campaign of NASSA/Caritas Philippines, encouraging a strategic approach of providing food and aid assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The predictable impact of the COVID crisis is manifested by the lack of food within the duration of the crisis—leading to hunger. This “Kindness Bakery” offers an alternative and sustainable solution to address the on-going and much more damaging food crisis.
